OTOLARYNGOLOGY: The oldest medical specialty in the United States. An Otolaryngologist (commonly referred to as an “ENT Physician”) is trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck including the sinuses, larynx (voice box) and oral cavity (mouth).

An ENT physician completes up to 15 years of rigorous college and post-graduate training before practicing privately. They first complete an undergraduate degree then move on to four years of medical school and at least five years of specialty training. At this point, the physician can finally qualify for certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology and must pass an examination to become an official member of the Board.
